My compressor wont stop building pressure. It will not cut off when the tank pressure is full.

by Paul Taylor
(Florece, MS)

I have a Jenny dual tank will barrow type compressor. It pump pressure fine but just dosn't stop building pressure. I change the pressure regulator but it still does the same thing.

Hi Paul.

The regulator's purpose is to reduce the air pressure to your air application downstream from the compressor, not to control the air pressure in the compressor tank. More on regulators here.

The device that controls the starting and stopping of the air compressor is the pressure switch. More on pressure switches here.

It sounds to me like you need a new pressure switch.

Bill

Compressor builds pressure then does not come back on.

I have a Husky 26 Gallon compressor that builds to 50 psi then shuts off and will not come back on.

Hello Nathan:

Why is the compressor shutting off at 50 PSI? Normally general purpose compressors have a high pressure set point of 120-170 PSI, sometimes higher.

If you normal pressure cut out level is over 100 PSI, and your compressor is shutting off (not blowing a breaker) at 50 PSI, then the switch has failed. Replace it.

Bill

Compressor builds preasure to 100lbs
by: Troy B

Compressor builds preasure to 100lbs then cut off and will not come back on till 0 Lbs if i hit the swtch to make it come back on it blows breaker .Is this a preasure switch ?

Have a look at the Unloader Valve page linked from the Valve page. If your unloader valve isn't working, that could overload the motor and cause a popped breaker. It starts at 0 PSI because the pressure over the piston has vented enough.

air compressor

by matt
(new boston mi)

I have a craftsman oil filled 3 horse compressor.
when it is first plugged in it runs fine but when pressure builds the compressor shuts off and all of the air bleeds off on the little lever actuated valve and tries to restart but pops the circuit breaker. Any ideas???

Yes, if the check valve going into your tank isn't working, when the compressor stops, all of the air in the tank will bleed back out of the unloader valve attached to your pressure switch.

The unloader valve is supposed to bleed the air off of over the piston, making restart easier. The check valve is supposed to keep the air in the tank when the unloader valve is open.

See this page about pressure switches and unloader valves.

Now, that your compressor is trying to start and can't - popping the breaker - means that when it's trying to start the motor is drawing more amps than the circuit can provide. That's caused by too much load on the motor (air trapped over the piston), a failing motor, a pressure switch failing or failed, or a start capacitor failing.

It could also be cause by too many other items on the same circuit pulling amps at the same time that the compressor is trying to start, and that pops the breaker too.

Check these out.

Good luck.

Bill

33 Gallon, 6HP Craftsman Air Compressor

by Mona Porter
(Tallahasee, Fl)

For a long time it cuts on and off at times. Lately, it will not cut off and the PVR valve pops. I was wondering if it might be the check valve causing the problem and if so, how do I fix or check that?

Hi Mona. From the information provided, I don't believe it is your check valve. I think your problem is the pressure switch.

Here is more info on pressure switches, to give you more understanding.

Thank You

Thank you for the information on how to fix my new air compressor. I just cleaned the check valve and all was well again, it wasn't the pressure switch, (just like) as you said.
Thank you x100.

Where does the little spring go?

by Roc
(Spokane Wa. USA)

I have a husky 80 gal. compressor It has a condor pressure switch. One of the contacts fell out, so I took the cover out and a little spring fell out, not one of the contact springs, but rather one that looks like it might go on one of the arms that actuate the contacts. Any ideas?

Hi Roc. Nope, I don't.

You might send it in again with a photo of the spring near the switch and see if any of our very knowledgeable readers can spot the location.

Otherwise, go to the compressor store and look under the cap of a switch on one of their compressors to see if you can spot the location. That's what I'd do.

Cheers,

Bill

Speedaire portable compressor model# 52032A-1 and my pressure regulator switch went out?

by rick
(antioch ca usa)

i have a speedaire portable compressor model# 52032A-1 and ny pressure regulator switch went out, and i have been searching for parts but i can't even find this compressor let alone parts for it. Can you help me please.

Rick, while you clearly know what part you are talking about, I'm not.

I am guessing however that you are asking about a pressure switch. Click the pressure switch button on the nav bar for more info on them, to be sure we are talking about the same thing.

You can purchase any general purpose air compressor pressure switch from your compressor store to replace yours as long as it is the same voltage, reasonably close cut in and cut out pressures, and you can interface both the supply port to the switch and the unloader valves into whatever style you select.

Cheers,

Bill

I also have the same problem. the pressure swith should shut compressor motor off when pressure reaches 100 psi. instead the safty Valve BLOWS!.
It would be great to puy a replacement sw. instead of Grafting On an aftermarket switch.

pressure switch

is there a wiring diagram for wiring the pressure switch on my dayton speedaire compressor

Bill says...

Hello, and thanks for writing in. The answer, of course, is yes there is.

First, look under the cap. If no diagram there, then contact Speedaire. (see Speedaire link from home page)

If that fails you, post your request for a diagram, providing as much info as possible (also from under the pressure switch cap) on this page.

Cheers,

Bill
